Coming out of hibernation

Hey everyone.  It’s been a while.  It’s been a long, cold winter, but today it’s like t-shirt weather (being an exceptionally balmy 42 degrees) and I think it’s about time for me to come out of the slumpy hibernation I’ve been in.  There have been some big shifts for me during the fall and winter, namely moving from a part-time position plus freelancing to a demanding full-time position, so that’s played a role in derailing my writing.

Anyhow, it’s time for me to get back in the saddle and write you guys some more sexy stories.  I’ve been alluding to some new projects for a while, so I’ll be working to finish those and get them up for sale.  And this time around, I’ll be announcing my new releases in my newsletter, so if you haven’t already, please sign up!

And more website work…

Been writing a lot lately, but unfortunately for the both of us, it’s code and not luscious monster sexytime (except don’t worry, I’m actually fairly close to done on one of my in-progress stories ).  The code, however, is for my website.  It was half-baked for a while, but now it’s really coming together.  I’m always exploring ways to make your viewing experience better and to make it easier to find and learn about my books, so it’s been a fun experience (yeah.. I’m kind of a nerd and love web coding and research and stuff…).

My New (Half-Baked) Website!

Hey everyone check it out!  A brand new theme for my site!   Much more fitting than my last one, in my humble opinion.  I mean, of course it fits better – I made it myself.

Thing is, it’s a premature launch.  Very premature, actually, which is why I’m calling it half-baked.  So why on earth am I launching a half-baked WordPress theme instead of a proper fully baked one?

Well, as you might have heard, there’s some scary stuff happening in the world of erotica right now, all thanks to some whiny jerk on Twitter and what is frankly a very creepy UK-based ‘tech blog’ that specializes in gossip and muckraking and whose owner specializes in bullying, blackmailing, and misogyny.  Unfortunately, the knee-jerk reaction to this “journalism” has been swift and far-reaching, with British retailer WHSmith shutting down its entire website, Kobo pulling all self-published titles (including mine), and Amazon removing countless erotica titles from its eBook store (including a couple of mine).  Yeah, it’s bad.

The frustrating part is that most of the erotica titles featured in these sensationalist exposés, which are actually quite extreme and disturbing, are the obvious work of black hat internet marketers.  But that doesn’t matter.  We’re all getting thrown in with the black hat riffraff anyway because that means more page views and controversy for a couple of “journalists” who seem to get off on negative attention and a certain sleazy British tabloid that picked up on the story.

ANYWAYS, enough about that crap.  What does that have to do with the new site?  Well, even though Amazon is pulling books, most of them are simply being reverted to draft so that authors can revise the “offending” elements and then put them back up for sale – they just don’t want it to be “shocking” to anyone who might accidentally stumble across it.  That means on Amazon, I’ll be using tamer descriptions without those deliciously detailed warning messages.  So, I need a way to go full monty with my blurbs, warnings, and excerpts.  That’s where this site comes in.

Over the next few days, I”ll be listing my catalog here so that you may read juicy excerpts and full descriptions of the happenings inside.  Each book listing will link to its page on the various eBook retailers for purchasing convenience, will be sortable by genre, and eventually, will be sortable by red-hot keywords.

Guess what? I’m starting a newsletter!

Yup, I’m finally getting the ball rolling on setting up a mailing list and newsletter!  And it shall be called The Letter X:

The Letter X Newsletter

X for Xavier, that is.  This lovely newsletter will contain plenty of early announcements, excerpts, freebies, and steamy exclusive content.  And probably more.

I’ll be taking care of the mailing list signup and other goodies tomorrow.  Stay tuned!

Amazon’s Secret Adult Filter

If you’ve noticed that your Amazon search results have become rather sparse in your search for erotic offerings, it’s not just you.  During the past few weeks, Amazon has greatly expanded the reach of their adult filter, filtering all sorts of erotic stories that were never subjected to the filter before.

So what’s bad about Amazon’s adult filter if it’s filtering content that’s clearly adult?

It certainly makes sense to keep what’s obviously adult content away from minors and those not interested in seeing it, and I support that.  However, the way Amazon goes about filtering is opaque and inconsistent, which causes problems for erotica authors, and for readers who aren’t finding content they want as easily as before.  I’m really not sure why they don’t auto-filter everything submitted to Erotica (and deal appropriately with unscrupulous folks who try to put erotic content in other categories).  Or give customers the option to turn on or off the mature content filter for their own searches.  But I guess that would make too much sense.

So what does this filter do to erotic books, exactly?

If a book is adult-filtered, it will be excluded from general front page ‘All Departments’ search results.

How do I find my erotica now?

Luckily, it’s very easy!  The stories are all still up for sale.  All you have to do is run your search from within the Books or Kindle Store department, and you’ll see adult-filtered content in your search results.  A thing to note is that the search algorithm still treats filtered books a bit differently and will put them beneath non-filtered content in the Relevance search, so you might have to do a bit more scrolling, or switch to New and Popular sorting.  Better yet, just search within the Erotica category.

So what happens now?

I’m pretty sure things will eventually sort themselves out as authors and readers alike learn how to navigate the new status quo on Amazon.  I figured I’d just post a friendly public service announcement to reassure readers that their steamy erotica is all still available.

However, I do wish that Amazon finds a better solution that accomplishes their apparent goal of keeping adult content away from the eyes of kids and anyone who finds it offensive (too many people, unfortunately, thanks to all the weird, residual stigma about sex in this country), but to also allow readers who do want to purchase and read it to access it without being hindered by unexplained, behind-the-curtain maneuvers.

Happy reading!

Coming soon!

My next story, Serpent God’s Virgin is due out shortly – this week for sure!  Just need to finish up some of the end, editing, and formatting, and then it’ll be ready to go.  For now, here’s the cover:

Alice, who the f*&% is Alice?!

Hi everyone! I’m finally getting my new website up and running, so I thought I’d start by introducing myself.

I’m a (relatively) new erotica author, presently specializing in the paranormal and fantastical. I enjoy throwing some BDSM elements into the mix as well. However, I also enjoy branching out and trying my hand at lots of different things.

In addition to being a writer, I’m also a designer. I have lots of fun making my own book covers, and am happy to offer my design services to other e-book authors in any genre.

I will be using my site to provide information about and purchasing information for my existing and upcoming books, do some blathering about my whimsical thought processes, the erotica genre, and the whole publishing scene, and of course, to share juicy tidbits with my readers. Also, don’t be surprised if the site’s appearance suddenly changes – I will be doing some work in the near future to make it awesome-looking and add some specialized features.

See you all around!
